Welcome to the website of the Project for Protection against Arbitrary Detention!

Our project aims to promote an international treaty that prohibits arbitrary detention of individuals involved in political activities. We focus on protecting human rights activists, dissidents, and political activists from authoritarian regimes and dictatorships that use arbitrary detention as a tool to silence critical voices.

Arbitrary detention and political imprisonment are serious and widespread issues worldwide. From Cuba and Venezuela to Nicaragua, China, Russia, and other autocracies, thousands of individuals face unjust detentions due to their struggle for democracy and human rights. While there are international treaties for human rights protection in place, we believe a more robust and specific approach is required to address this global epidemic.

On our website, you will find information on the importance of protecting dissidents and human rights defenders, along with compelling data and testimonials that highlight the urgency of this issue. We will also share the latest updates on the progress of our project and the steps we are taking to foster international change.

We invite you to join our campaign from civil society. Together, we can make a difference by advocating for a new international treaty that provides stronger legal protections for those facing arbitrary detention. Through advocacy, awareness-building, and mobilization, we aim to raise awareness about this challenge and pressure world leaders to take action.

Explore our website and join our cause! Together, we can confront injustice and safeguard the fundamental rights of those bravely fighting for freedom and democracy.

Vision Statement:

A united world where human rights defenders, including former political prisoners and families of current political prisoners, join hands through collective action and collaborative work to draft a proposal for an international treaty. This treaty will serve as a powerful instrument in safeguarding the rights of activists and human rights defenders, protecting them from arbitrary detention and ensuring their freedom to advocate for justice and equality.

Mision Statement:

These instruments and treaties provide protections against arbitrary detention and other human rights violations. They establish standards and principles that countries are encouraged to uphold and implement to safeguard individuals’ rights.

It’s important to note that while these legal instruments exist, their effectiveness relies on the willingness of states to comply and enforce the provisions outlined within them. Another limitation of existing legislation, is there isn’t a focus on arbitrary detention on the basis of political affiliation or advocacy. Despotic or authoritarian regimes use arbitrary detention as a tool to put a stop to civil movements. This is a clear violation of human rights, and also is especially damaging the families of the detained and the communities that they are advocating for. Ongoing advocacy, awareness, and efforts to hold governments accountable for their unjust practices are essential to ensure the protection of individuals from arbitrary detention for political reasons. This is why we are proposing a new treaty, beyond existing legislation.
